An 84-year-old grandmother somewhere nearby just redeemed a two-for-one deal on Facebook. Is there any stronger evidence that social media has serious reach? Sure, you probably have a million excuses why you don’t have a page for your business, but really, what are you waiting for?
Jump in with Facebook because everyone is on it, particularly the 40+ crowd and increasingly the boomers. Also, it’s easy to use and can reach thousands of people (once you’ve built a following, of course). All you have to do is create a Fan Page, at no cost, then post pictures, videos, and written content about your company. By developing a focused plan of time-sensitive status updates and promotions, you can benefit from increased traffic to not only your Facebook page, but also your website. You can also post milestones on the page–100 Likes! 1000 Likes!–and thank your fans for their dedication and loyalty.
Twitter is also an easy social media platform to use. With it, you can advertise and promote products and events, as well as keep clients and customers interested in your company by posting quips and pictures or linking to photos and articles. With Twitter, you are forced to keep your updates brief, as Twitter only allows its users to write 140 characters at a time. This is extremely beneficial, as the average consumer doesn’t want to read an entire paragraph about the current happenings within your company.
LinkedIn is the premiere networking site for business people. You absolutely must have a personal profile and one for your company. If you do nothing else, do this.
Other social media platforms include Tumblr, Pinterest, and YouTube. While you may choose to use these platforms, remember that Tumblr reaches a very specific demographic, namely angsty teenagers and young adults. Depending on your target, you may have better luck, and more potential for profit, using Pinterest and YouTube. With YouTube, you can post fun promotional, feature, informational, or human interest videos such as “How-Tos” or a “Meet the Team.” Pinterest focuses on visuals rather than words and is especially useful for product-oriented businesses.
